Hiring a car on holiday even if it is only for part of the time can give you the freedom to explore the area. Here are some simple tips to help avoid any hassles:
Tip 1: Shop Around
Prices can vary greatly so if you are booking in advance shop around on-line. If you are going to a popular holiday destination the summer months can be very busy for car hire so it might be best to book in advance to get the kind of car you want at a good price. If you are hiring a car locally whilst on holiday it still pays to check out a few places before making your decision.
Tip 2: Read The Small Print
Check over the policy and read the fine print to see what fees are included. Understanding all the terms and conditions can save future problems. For example if you are travelling to another destination some companies may penalise you for not returning the car to the same branch you collected it from. There may be additional costs if you take the car out of the country and you may also get charged more if you are under a certain age limit.
Tip 3: Check What’s Covered By Insurance
Check what is covered by the insurance as some components such as windscreens, roofs or even tyres may not be covered by the insurance.
Keep an eye out for the level of excess as these can be extremely high in order to make the standard payments look really attractive.
Tip 4: Check Arrangements For Fuel
Check what the rules are regarding fuel. It is extremely rare that fuel is included in the price. Most common is collecting the car with a full tank and returning it in the same way. Others allow you to bring it back virtually empty. It is important to read or ask to find out either way as you do not want a penalty or have spent money filling up the tank when you did not need to.
Tip 5: Inspect The Car Before You Drive Away
Give your car a thorough inspection on collection. If there are any marks, scratches or broken items make sure they are clearly recorded by the rental company so that you cannot be held responsible.
Tip 6: Familiarise Yourself With Driving Rules
When driving into another country or state, the driving laws may be different. It is important to check this and make sure you are aware of any differences.
Tip 7: Respect Speed Limits
If you are caught speeding and fail to pay the fine the hire company will chase you for the charge plus additional administration fees. Familiarise yourself with the speed limits in the country in which you are driving and take care!
Tip 8: Returning the car
When returning the car, be sure to bring it back before the agreed time as this may incur a penalty. Allow for plenty of time on your route back in case of traffic or any other distractions.
