Most of us have drama free holidays and never need to make a claim on our travel insurance but it is something that most of us would not be without. It is a small investment with big benefits should we need to make a claim as long as we have got the right insurance for our needs. Here are some tips to help you get the right travel insurance for your holiday
Tip 1: Not All Policies Are The Same
Whilst most travel insurance policies will cover you for the essentials such as cancelled flights, medical expenses and lost luggage it is often the small print that makes the difference. What if your flights are delayed – does it give you cover? If you are very ill will the policy pay for your return home or just the medical costs whilst you are away? It is important to check that a policy meets your needs before you buy.
Tip 2: Cheapest May Not Be Best
Whilst it is tempting to go for the cheapest policy you do need to check the small print as often cheaper premiums mean a lower level of cover. This might be absolutely fine for your personal circumstances but sometimes paying a little more gets you a lot more cover and can give you greater peace of mind.
Tip 3: Be Honest About Your Health History
Tell your insurers about any medical conditions. Many medical conditions will be accepted but in some cases you may need to pay extra for cover. If you are not honest with your insurers when you take out the policy and then need to make a claim you may discover that you are not covered for medical costs relating to a previously known medical condition and your whole policy may become invalid.
Tip 4: Be Aware of Behaviour That Might Invalidate Your Policy
Whilst we all want to have fun and enjoy our holidays it is important to be aware that most insurers do not cover drug or drink related misdemeanours.
Tip 5: Save Money With An Annual Policy
If you are a regular traveller you can often save money by buying an annual policy to cover all your travels. Be sure to check that the policy covers all your intended destinations.
Tip 6: Adventurous Folk Need Special Policies
If you are the adventurous type and will be participating in sports activities that insurers consider high risk you may need to pay for extra cover. The higher the risk the higher the premiums! Insures will usually ask when you are enquiring about the policy but if you are buying on line or renewing a previous annual policy it is your responsibility to tell your insurers of your planned adventures. If you don’t you may find your policy is invalidated.
